Leaving

Leaving (see in Gallery / Store)| Image by Bruce Harris

I drive under these branches in their varying shapes and shades every day. They cross over our driveway near the garage. I pull the car out with something to do, something playing on my phone, usually a podcast — sports, music, news — always checking off a task list full as ticks filling a clock. And then I arrive back home. Maybe run the trash to the curb on garbage day or blow the leaves or cut the lawn. Maybe throw a ball for Ollie the dog or leash him for the neighborhood walk and think nothing of the most obvious things. The light lighting the trees. The everyday change. The ever-tilting earth. The always leaving of what inevitably will be gone.
